Global Vue questions:
Do you measure and track who visits your site? Can you tell how people are finding the site? How? Are your visitors mostly local or do you have repeat visitors from far away? Does Google bring you many visitors? Technorati? Facebook? How many people visit the site weekly?
Are you nonprofit or for-profit? Where does most of your revenue come from (if you feel comfortable sharing)?

Steve Outing has a 15 page white-paper (PDF) for the Enthusiast Group called, "Talk, Why Don't You." Haven't read it all yet, but it looks like a great resource. Come back here to discuss if you want. I may add more thoughts later. (h/t to JD Lasica)

Does your site concentrate on 'hard news' (police, fire, politics, etc.) or community journalism (lifestyle, opinion, etc.)...
Is it better to have more of one type than the other? Is it up to our audiences?
What would be an ideal mix?
Just some thoughts/questions to throw out there.

If you're not using tags or taxonomy on your content, I urge you to start. Not only does it make it easier for people users to find things on your site (see the MFP 'Index'), it allows Google's robots to classify information from your site. I find a get a decent amount of traffic from 'long tail' searches.
Every so often, I study the terms people are using to find the site, and incorporate them into tags on the stories.
