WCCO (TV Station) Covering a Citizen Journalism Site

(Note, I get a bit of the ad revenues when this is played...) This was interesting, I thought. A progressive (from what I've seen!) station WCCO ran this piece on The Uptake (who I hadn't heard of...) I emailed one of Indy's TV stations tonight and pitched an idea to do something similar here in Indiana. Who knows what will happen (probably ignored), but it's worth a shot, I think. Anyway, the video is interesting... (also note I prefer the term grassroots journalism. We need to discuss that at some point - or will it be up to future journalists to label it?)

Anyone in Google News?

Any other independent grassroots journalism websites out there gotten into Google News?
I don't have the link handy, but last I looked they were accepting applications. It's a good way to get your website seen by people who use Google News to scan a whole pile of newspapers (er, websites) at a time.
Maybe a how-to on the submission process is in order? If there's interest, I could write something up.

Writing Shop 1.1 - Writing for the Web

How many of you write headlines thinking of search engines (or how they will show up in an RSS feed) in mind?

What about the first graf?

Hard News or Community News?

Does your site concentrate on 'hard news' (police, fire, politics, etc.) or community journalism (lifestyle, opinion, etc.)...
Is it better to have more of one type than the other? Is it up to our audiences?
What would be an ideal mix?
Just some thoughts/questions to throw out there.

Health Insurance!!

I've been down sick a few days, which is why I haven't been posting. Brings up an interesting and important matter, though - Health Insurance.
I can't afford it now (living at the poverty level), but once I get to the point where I have employees, they're going to have super benefits. Will help me attract talented people as well as being the right thing to do.
Any independent publishers out there paying for insurance?
I've been extremely lucky the last 2.5 years (except for once...), but I know it won't last forever.
Thoughts on this?

About LocalJournalism.net

I bought this domain a while ago. Then, PlaceBlogger   appeared. I think at that point, I had a Google Maps mashup with a very limited database. I decided to put the site/idea on the shelf for a while.

One of our first members contacted me and asked for a site that helped people share information about the grassroots journalism movement sweeping the planet. (And no, we haven't gotten into a debate here yet about what to call it. If you haven't noticed, I prefer grassroots journalism.)
